MY BRILLIANT SNIFF IT OUT TRACKER SPELL

Ash

Cinnamon

Dandelion

Thyme

Thrice ring a golden bell and then the spirits will tell

Lay off, I was going through my dangerous spells must rhyme stage.

I invented the spell to track my witch’s schoolbooks, which I’d amused myself by giving sentience to and then regretted it, when they’d decided that it was boring always being put on a shelf and rebelled.

To be fair, it’d been a spirited bid for freedom, with banners, berets, and even revolutionary anthems.

My witch was a wee bit annoyed, however, when she could never find her books for lessons.

That was a fun school year. My witch might have a different recollection of events, m’lud.

Precious nudged open the attic door with his nose and trotted into the room. His paws were caked in mud, and his coat was clumped together like he’d been rolling around in the garden, which explained why he’d taken so long to retrieve the dandelion for the spell.

Dogs were idiots.

Precious held the dandelion by its stalk; its golden head sagged sadly from his teeth.

Dandelions promoted psychic power and called on the spirits from between the veils to track for you. Unless the spirits became pissed off and gutted you like a…well, a gutted kitty.

Best not to think about that.

Precious tilted up his chin, proudly. You’d think he’d brought in a mouse to present to his master. Now that deserved a pat on the head and worship. It was weird how often it received screams and punishment, instead.

Still, positive reinforcement.

“Well done,” I said, graciously. “That’s excellent tribute. And this is a fun game, right?”

Precious nodded.

The one thing puppy familiars were good for was fetching, even if I had to pretend, which always sounded so much better than lie, that this was a Fetching Treasure Hunt for Ingredients game.

Sure, what was the harm, if I gained some Play Servant points, and his Precious’ whole body looked like one big, fluffy wag?

Precious dropped the dandelion into the cauldron and then barked. “Hail Satan! What’s this flower that I’ve stolen?”

“Borrowed,” I corrected. “And it’s a weed. My witch hates these orange, sun-headed bastards. So, you’ve been doing some much needed weeding for her. She’ll be pleased.” Unlikely. “I think the wee things are pretty and bring a touch of color to spells, but then, I’m an artist.”

Precious raised a muddy paw, guiltily. “I dug up one of her favorite flowerbeds.”

I shrugged. “Does anyone truly have a favorite flowerbed?”

“Right, like she won’t care about the big hole.”

I waved my paw . “She doesn’t notice the holes in her underwear. We’re fine.”

I needed to remember to point out the rips in her briefs. She’d be sure to give me extra head strokes.

Precious’ tail hung between his legs. “Are you mocking me? There’s muddy pawprints all the way through the cottage.”

“It needed some new decorations.” I pointed at the bell. “Now get that between your teeth and wait for my signal.”

By my tail, the bell gag was brilliant.

Precious snatched up the bell.

“You’ll love this spell,” I promised. “It’s
